چکیده

We study the horizontal transport of ultracold atoms over macroscopic distances of up to 20 cm with a moving 1D optical lattice. By using an optical Bessel beam to form the optical lattice, we can achieve almost homogeneous trapping conditions over the full transport length, which is necessary to hold the atoms against gravity for such a wide range. Fast transport velocities of up to 6m/s (corresponding to about 1100 photon recoils) and accelerations of up to 2600m/s are reached. Even at high velocities the momentum of the atoms is precisely defined with an uncertainty of less than one photon recoil. This allows for construction of an atom catapult with high kinetic energy resolution, which might have applications in novel collision experiments.

T > 0 transport properties in integrable quantum lattice systems

We show that a generalized charge SU(2) symmetry of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model in an infinitesimal flux φ generates half-filling states from metallic states which lead to a finite charge stiffness D(T ) at finite temperature T , whose T dependence we study. Our results are of general nature for many integrable quantum lattice systems, reveal the microscopic mechanisms behind their e...

State preparation and dynamics of ultracold atoms in higher lattice orbitals.

We report on the realization of a multiorbital system with ultracold atoms in the excited bands of a 3D optical lattice by selectively controlling the band population along a given lattice direction. The lifetime of the atoms in the excited band is found to be considerably longer (10-100 times) than the characteristic time scale for intersite tunneling, thus opening the path for orbital selecti...

Construction of a Quantum Gas Microscope for Fermionic Atoms

This thesis reports the construction of a novel apparatus for experiments with ultracold atoms in optical lattices: the Fermi gas microscope. Improving upon similar designs for bosonic atoms, our Fermi gas microscope has the novel feature of being able to achieve single-site resolved imaging of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice; specifically, we use fermionic potassium-40, sympathetically c...

Dark Optical Lattice of Ring Traps for Cold Atoms

We propose a new geometry of optical lattice for cold atoms, namely a lattice made of a 1D stack of dark ring traps. It is obtained through the interference pattern of a standard Gaussian beam with a counter-propagating hollow beam obtained using a setup with two conical lenses. The traps of the resulting lattice are characterized by a high confinement and a filling rate much larger than unity,...

Emergence of superfluidity in a dynamical system of ul- tracold atoms

– The dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate is studied theoretically in a combined periodic plus harmonic external potential. Different dynamical regimes of stable and unstable collective dipole and Bloch oscillations are analysed in terms of a quantum mechanical pendulum model. Nonlinear interactions are shown to counteract quantum-mechanical dephasing and lead to superfluid behaviour. The st...
